Your air ambulance needs you

Kent Air Ambulance is appealing for volunteers to help with street collections throughout the county during Air Ambulance Week.

Members of the public are needed to carry out bucket collections in High Streets, supermarkets and shopping centres between 23rd and 25th September.

Although the charity has an army of registered volunteers, temporary helpers are being sought to help raise vital funds to go towards the £1.7m-a-year cost of keeping the helicopter flying.

They can be individuals, clubs, groups, societies or business organisations and they do not have to sign up or commit to further fundraising.

Volunteers Roger and Angela Bates, from Romney Marsh, have helped with street collections after he was airlifted by the helicopter following a fall at work in 2002.

He said: “We’ve been doing it for four years and we’re looking forward to helping again this year. It’s really well worth doing.

“A lot of people we talk to still do not realise the air ambulance exists but without them I would not be here and I enjoy raising money for them.”

Air Ambulance Week runs from 20th to 27th September and is extra special this year as the Marden-based helicopter celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The aim of the fundraisers and their team of volunteers is to collect £20,000 to mark this magnificent milestone, beating last year’s total of £15,000.

Anyone interested in becoming a temporary volunteer is urged to call Amy Salter on 01622 833833.

Bumper crowd at helicopter Open Day

A record crowd flocked to the Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Open Day on Sunday, helping to raise more than £10,000 for the life-saving charity.

About 6,000 visitors turned out for the annual event at Dunsfold Park to meet the crew of the twin-engine MD902 helicopter.

Pilots, doctors and paramedics signed autographs for members of the public who were given a guided tour of the aircraft which can reach patients within minutes.

There was also a visit from the Sussex Police helicopter, Hotel 900, and pleasure flights courtesy of London Helicopter Centre.

Sussex Air Ambulance County Fundraiser Bridget Pepper said: “This year we exceeded all expectations so a huge thanks must go to all those who came and supported us and our sponsors and volunteers.

“From beginning to end there was so much to do and we will strive to make it even bigger and better next year when it will be held on June 12.”

Attractions included crash scene displays, rescue enactments, tours of a Boeing 747, Rolls Royce rides, a Pimm’s tent and music from the Pantastic steel band.

There was also a special visit from the Daleks, a hog roast and barbecue while the children enjoyed a funfair, face painting and a small animal petting farm.

One lucky woman from Southwater won a helicopter ride for two in the grand raffle, allowing her to fly over her mother’s home in nearby Alfold.

She was joined by former West Sussex County Fundraiser Delaine Shearman who was given a flight as a leaving present from colleagues after more than three years’ service.

Raffle prizes also included a gliding lesson and a family ticket to Wings and Wheels at Dunsfold Park on August 29 and 30.

A handmade quilt in the blue and white colours of the Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance was also donated by the Thameside Sewing Bees.

Cash from the third Dunsfold Open Day will go towards the £1.7m-a-year cost of keeping the helicopter airborne. Each flying mission alone costs between £1,500 and £2,000.
